Can-Am Connecting Rod Plain Bearings (Set of 4)

Plain bearings, also called shell bearings, consist of two precision-machined halves that fit into the connecting rod's big end. When installed, a thin layer of engine oil separates the bearing surface from the crankshaft journal. This oil film prevents metal-to-metal contact, absorbs combustion forces, and dissipates heat. Over time, normal wear, debris, or oil starvation can degrade the bearing material, leading to increased clearance and eventual failure.

Worn or damaged connecting rod bearings often produce a rhythmic knocking or tapping sound from the engine, especially under load or at idle. Low oil pressure, metallic debris in the oil, and a noticeable increase in engine noise are typical indicators. If ignored, a seized bearing can cause catastrophic engine damage, including a broken connecting rod or damaged crankshaft.

These bearings must be installed with the correct orientation—matching the bearing locating tang to the groove in the rod and cap. All surfaces must be meticulously cleaned, and bearings should be coated with clean engine oil or assembly lube before installation. Connecting rod bolt torque must be followed precisely using a torque wrench, and bolts should be replaced if specified by the manufacturer (always consult the service manual for your specific model).
